Mugaward Way Up Foundation is positioning itself as a bridge between rural producers and urban consumers in Uganda. We borrow the spirit of a member-driven, quality-focused retail system, then translate it into a practical local model that serves smallholder farmers, women, youth and low-income families.
Uganda has a powerful agricultural base, but many smallholders remain excluded from reliable, rewarding markets. Urban demand is growing, yet many consumers still face high prices, inconsistent quality and limited trust in supply chains. Mugaward’s model closes that gap by treating food as both a livelihood engine and a community service.
More than 70% of people in Uganda work in agriculture, and the country has more than 3.5 million family farms. At the same time, many smallholders remain among the poorest and most vulnerable households, which means better market organization is not optional — it is essential.
To connect smallholder farmers and urban consumers through a trusted food system that improves production quality, market access, affordability and community livelihoods.
A Uganda where local food systems are organized, inclusive and resilient, and where both producers and consumers can thrive through fairer relationships, stronger communities and practical economic opportunity.
This model is not a direct copy, but a thoughtful adaptation to Uganda’s realities. While Migros Switzerland highlights the value of customer focus, cooperative structures, and integrated systems, Mugaward Way Up Foundation reinterprets these strengths to fit a context shaped by smallholder farming, informal markets, local trust networks, urban affordability needs, and community-based financing.
